Technically Incorrect: In a new ad, Samsung
tries to put an iPhone or two on one of its
wireless chargers. Oddly, it doesn't charge. It would be depressing if Samsung didn't at least
acknowledge the launch of new iPhones by explaining what
poor specimens of technology they are.
On cue, the Galaxists have released a new ad to remind
Apple users that their iPhones don't work with Samsung
wireless chargers. And perhaps also, that unlike Samsung,
Apple doesn't make a wireless charger for its signature
smartphone.
This isn't the first time that Samsung has suggested Apple
users are slaves to power cords. Last year, it released an
ad that described iPhoneists as "wall huggers ." This terms
was first uttered by BlackBerry CEO John Chen .
Samsung's latest phones -- especially the Galaxy S6 Edge+
-- are extremely pretty things. However, the company has
drifted a little as Apple has moved relentlessly forward. This
week rumors emerged that Samsung was laying off 10
percent of its staff, which the company denied .
This latest ad is just a small reminder that the Galaxy
phones do have material advantages. One thing Apple
certainly didn't improve on with its new phones this week is,
as my colleague David Carnoy pointed out , battery life.
The only question is whether people care enough about
such advantages to switch from iPhone.
Commendable in this ad is the choice of music -- Lady
Leshurr's "Queen's Speech 4" -- which creates a wonderful
atmosphere for the tweaking. As well as, I suppose, for
twerking, if that's what you're into.
Samsung needs to create a much broader and more
compelling atmosphere around its phones to truly challenge
Apple again, as it did when its first big-screen phones came
out.
