Taking to the skies in your everyday car is something that many people dream about, but Terrafugia is set to make that vision a reality with its latest flying machine that could see you commuting right up in the clouds. Got a few hundred thousand to spare?
The Terrafugia TF-X is the company’s latest airborne car which is set to hit production soon, and is the follow-up to the Terrafugia Transition which was unveiled in 2009 and due to go on-sale in 2015. The latest model is even more versatile than the previous model, as it’s able to take-off and land vertically thanks to the twin rotor blades on the end of its wings – so you won’t be needing your own runway to get off the ground. Under the hood, the TF-X is set to use a plug-in hybrid powertrain, which the company claims will get the hybrid flying at a maximum of 200mph – a lot faster than the Transition, which tops out at 115mph.
If you’re not the greatest pilot in the skies, the TF-X can help you out with its onboard intelligent autopilot and controls similar to those found in your average car, meaning even if you’re terrible at parallel parking, flying around should be a piece of cake: you just have to tell the machine where to fly and it will do the rest. The flying car is good for up to 500 miles before you’ll need to refuel it, but if you run out mid-flight, there’s even a parachute to help you land safely.
Unfortunately, the TF-X won’t be heading into production until 2021, assuming there’s no problems in development, but its Transition brother will be available to purchase in 2015 for just £130,000 – plus the price of a runway.
